Yogi Adityanath breaks down in LS, colleague wipes his tears

Amid chants of "shame, shame" of MPs, Yogi Aditya Nath said in Lok  Sabha: 'I have given up my family, my life and took on to sanyas. I have won from Gorakhpur three times with majority. Now due to political rivalry, I am being haunted and tormented,' the MP said.

Seeking protection, he asked Speaker Somnath Chatterjee: 'As the custodian of this house, you should be able to protect me. If it is not possible, I think I should resign as an MP.

'I am treated like a culprit because I have raised my voice against ISI activities at the Indo-Nepal border,' he said, adding he was kept in detention for 11 days despite the rule that MPs could not be kept under arrest for more than 24 hours.

He also alleged that the Mulayam Singh government in Uttar Pradesh was trying to appease the Muslims by arresting him.

Yogi alleged he was being "framed" in false cases and the cases in which he had been cleared by the CB-CID years back were being reopened as he was raising issues confronting people and was speaking against corruption and growing activities of the ISI on the Indo-Nepal border.

He claimed that 14 of his supporters have been booked under the National Security Act and he himself was not provided reasons for his arrest for seven days.

As the entire house watched in shock, his party colleague Brijbhushan Singh, who was seated near to him, stood up and wiped his tears.

Adityanath, who was allegedly kept in preventive arrest for 11 days, was arrested Jan 28 and sent to jail along with 150 of his supporters after the area witnessed communal tension

Adityanath Yogi

He (born 5 June 1972 in Garhwal of Uttarakhand) is the Member of Parliament from Gorakhpur (Lok Sabha Constituency) since 1998. He is three timer in the Lok Sabha. First time he elected by the margin of fifty thousand. Second time he won by a margin of one lakh. He has been most recently re-elected in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections on the BJP ticket by  the margin of over one and half lakh votes

What is the sin of Yogi Adityanatn?

He is the mahant or head priest of the Gorakhnath Mutt, a Hindu temple in Gorakhpur, and is also the founder of the Hindu Yuva Vahini. For several years, Adityanath has been active in admitting back into the folds of Hinduism of the converted Hindus in Christianty. In 2005, a large group of 1800 people were re-afmitted in the town of Etah in UP . He is also active in several go rakShA (cow protection) organizations.

On Dec 22-24 2006, Adityanath organized a three day Virat Hindu Mahasammelan at Gorakhpur, during the same period when the BJP was holding its National Executive Meet in Lucknow in the same state. A few weeks later, on the eve of the Muharramcelebrations planned for 30 January 2007, communal tensions increased in Gorakhpur. On Jan 28, a Hindu youth was name Agroha was killed by the Anti-Hindu crowd when Agroha was in the police jeep.

Yagi Mahant was arresteed by the police due to his enterance in the area where sec 144 was decared. Instead of takiking co-operation of Parliamentarian of the constituency in making peace in the disturbed area, police in the direction of Mulayam Singh arrested MP Yogi. 

On Feb 1, 2007: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy said the arrest of BJP's Gorakhpur MP, Yogi Aditya Nath, violated the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in the Joginder Singh versus the State of UP case, 1994 and the D.K. Basu versus the State of West Bengal case, 1997, on the detention of religious heads.

Gorakhnath Temple

One of the Gorakhnath temples is situated in the district of Gorkha in Nepal and there is another one in the south of Gorakhpur which is in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. It is the centre of all the religious activities which take place in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The Gorakhnath Temple is built in the memory of Baba Gorakhnath who was the eminent yogi of his time. Some people believe and argue that the another word 'Gurkha’ for Nepalis and the name 'Gorkha of one of the 75 administrative districts of Nepal originated from the name of the yogi Gorakhnath.

Thousands of devotees throng these temples on the occasion of Makar Sankraanti, when they offer Khichdi to Gorakshanath Baba. The royal King of Nepal also sometimes visits one of these temples during this festival of Hindus. A fete is observed in Gorakhnath Temple in that week. At present Mahant Avaidyanath is the head priest of this temple and he has appointed yogi Aditya Nath his successor
