Failure of Syringe Bomb Technology used in London Glasgow

Eight suspects in London and Glasgow Terror Plot are reported to have stolen medical equipment to use as part of the detonation system. Syringes packed with high explosives are known to have been used in car bombs by Palestinian groups.

The London and Glasgow devices were not explosives at all, but firebombs. The London bomb plot allegedly planned by a cell of doctors failed because a medical syringe use as part of the firing mechanism caused a malfunction, a media report said.

When a bomb technician in 90-pound Kevlar suit walked down to the vehicle to examine it, he also found a firing system rigged inside the car and another inside its trunk along with four jugs of gasoline. The technician successfully disarmed the devices. A second Mercedes rigged with a similar incendiary device was parked several hundred yards away.

Once the mobile number is called, an electrical circuit is completed and ignites the liquid in the syringe. This explodes and sets off the main charge. In the UK plot, the bomb failed to explode despite repeated calls to the mobile phone.

The FBI-DHS report next warns law enforcement agencies about the two peroxide-based liquid explosive that could be used in a future attack against the U.S.–triacetone triperoxide (TATP) or hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD). The report describes how a terrorist would assemble bombs with these chemicals. Peroxide-based liquid explosives “are sensitive to heat, shock, and friction, can be initiated simply with fire or electrical charge, and can also be used to produce improvised detonators,” the report states. “For example, TATP or HMTD may be placed in a tube or syringe body in contact with a bare bulb filament, such as that obtained from inside a Christmas tree light bulb, to produce an explosion.”
