Born in Raipur, Habib Tanveer had given dance-gammat worldwide recognition

Famous theatre, screenwriter, theatrical director, poet and actor Habib Tanveer was born in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. He gave recognition to Chhattisgarh’s folk drama Nacha-Gammat worldwide. His drama is still on people’s lips. The name of the village, more than 100 plays like Sasural Mor Naam son-in-law, Ponga Pandit, Charandas Chor, Agra Bazar were staged in the country and abroad.

Theater artist Habib Tanveer always wrote and played plays related to the land. Famous playwright, director, poet and actor Habib Tanveer left the world’s theater on 8 June. Habib Tanveer staged more than 100 plays in his long journey of 50 years. Chess Pieces, Lala Shohrat Rai, Mitti Ki Gaadi, The Broken Bridge, Poisonous Hawa and Raj Rakt are among his famous plays. After a long illness, he said goodbye to the world on the same day of June 8 in 2009 at the age of 85 in Bhopal.

Habib Tanveer was born on 1 September 1923 in Baijnath Para, Raipur. His childhood name was Habib Ahmed Khan. He did his matriculation from Lawrie Municipal High School, graduated from Maris College Nagpur and did his MA from Aligarh Muslim University. Since childhood, he was fond of writing poetry. First started writing under the pseudonym of Tanveer which later became his calling name. He established the new theater company in Delhi in 1959. He died on 8 June 2009 in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh.
