Develop Rail transport to save petrol and to strengthen Rupee against dollar
We import 80% of India’s crude oil. Why are we not thinking to develop the rail trasport to minimize the pressure on road transport and to save foreign exchange? Why are we habitual to depend on foreigners and foreign countries? Even we have become habitual to import Italians to rule India!
We are discouraging arms mfg with in our country. Our main source of arm supply to our army is imported arms. This gives rise in corruption in arms deals as we see from Bofors to VVip choppergate and so many other corruption gates. BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi rightly suggested at his Rewari Rally in the presence of General V K Singh that India should develop its own manufactruing process to fulfill the maximum requirements of our army.
It is unfortunate that instead of Congress led government Sindhu Rakshak Submarine purchased from Russia sank in the sea under a sabotage conspiracy.
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up for its next mission — the launch of naval defence satellite GSAT 7. The GSAT 7 or INSAT 4F is primarily meant for the use of the Indian Navy and other armed forces. It will cater to their telecommunication needs. People want to hear this type of news.
Speaking to TSI on the sidelines of an award function organised by Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) in New Delhi in Jan 2012, former Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan said, “I don’t believe that privatisation could be a solution for the problems plaguing Indian Railways. If privatised railways too would end up as money making business for some.” Founder director of IIPM, Dr MK Chaudhuri conferred the Swami Vivekananda Memorial Award to former chairman of DMRC E Sreedharan for his contribution in project management realm.
JOHN PRESCOTT COLUMN writes on May 19, 2013:
Now we have proof nationalised railways are better run, invest more and save taxpayers cash
Even Thatcher thought it was a terrible idea – splitting up British Rail so the franchised services were sold to the highest bidder
Oil be damned!
There are legitimate questions as to the effectiveness of the EU, but hats off to its commission for exposing the scandal of big oil companies allegedly colluding to rig petrol prices for a decade.
Prices have risen 80 per cent, from 75p per litre in 2002 to £1.33 per litre yesterday.
I remember when I doubled as a Euro MP, investigating the seven large oil companies in 1977 for acting in concert to bribe Italian politicians for legislative favours.
They admitted acting illegally and apologised. They included BP and others who are now being investigated for price collusion.
Similar practices are adopted by global privatised utilities – gas, water, energy and railway companies – to maximise profit to the disadvantage of the consumer and the British taxpayer.
Thank God we have the EU to stand up to them, not like the Government, which shouts but does nothing.
Nearly 80% of India’s crude oil needs imported
In a written reply in parliament, M Veerappa Moily said the estimated demand for 2013-14 of petrol, diesel and LPG is 16,335 MT, 73,500 MT and 16,712 MT, respectively. The minister said 78.75% of crude oil required in India for petroleum products has to be imported. The issue of oil imports has come under focus in the context of the country’s spiralling current account deficit. “As per the working group report of this ministry for the 12th Five Year Plan, the estimated demand of petroleum products during 2016-17 would be 186.2 million metric tonnes,” Moily said.
An electric locomotive is a locomotive powered by electricity from overhead lines, a third rail or on-board energy storage such as a battery or fuel cell. Electric locomotives with on-board fuelled prime movers, such as diesel engines or gas turbines, are classed as diesel-electric or gas turbine-electric locomotives because the electric generator/motor combination serves only as a power transmission system. Electricity is used to eliminate smoke and take advantage of the high efficiency of electric motors, but the cost of electrification means that usually only heavily used lines can be electrified.
Electric traction in India
In India, both AC and DC electrified lines operate. 1,500 V DC operates only in the Mumbai area, and it is being converted to 25 kV AC. The rest of the India, where routes are electrified fully, uses 25 kV AC, 50 Hz.
As of 2006, Indian railways haul 80% of freight and 85% of passenger traffic with electric locomotives. Early 2800 hp SNCF design for 25kV AC, with ignitron rectifiers. Introduced in 1959, they were mostly deployed by ER in the Howrah-Asansol-Dhanbad-Mughalsarai section. They were less frequently found ‘upstream’ in the Delhi-Kanpur-Mughalsarai section and in the Igatpuri-Bhusaval section of the Central Railway. They were mostly used for non-express passenger trains but some were used double-headed for freight service. Some were still in operation on ER (Sealdah-Lalgola passenger etc.).
WAM-1 locomotives are significant in the history of electric traction in India as they were among the first AC electrics to run in India. Like the WAG-1s, some of their advanced features turned out to be unsuitable for Indian conditions. Manufactured by Kraus-Maffei, Krupp, SFAC, La Brugeoise & Nivelle (50 cycles European group), ignitron rectifiers feed four DC traction motors that accept pulsating current input. Motors are connected to the axles by a Jacquemin drive. Speed control is by tap-changer on the input transformer (motors permanently wired in parallel). The superstructure is mounted on bogies with pendular suspension and equalizer beams.
