During the G7 Summit held in Alberta, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney convened to address the diplomatic rift triggered by the 2023 killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The leaders agreed to fully reinstate diplomatic services, signaling a commitment to mend strained relations. Both nations emphasized the importance of their historical ties and the need for mutual respect and trust to rebuild the relationship.
Following their discussions, India and Canada announced their intention to appoint new high commissioners. Carney described the meeting as foundational, highlighting the exchange of views on crucial matters such as law enforcement and transnational repression. He emphasized the significance of this initial step in re-establishing a relationship based on mutual respect, sovereignty, and trust.
Discussions at the summit also encompassed the strong historical bonds between the countries and partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region, focusing on economic growth and supply chains. Carney noted PM Modi’s consistent participation in G7 summits since 2018, attributing it to India’s economic strength, dynamism, and technological advancements, as well as its leadership role in forums like the G20. Carney anticipates PM Modi’s continued presence at the G7 Summit in France next year.
PM Modi, reflecting on the visit, expressed gratitude to the Canadian government and people for hosting a successful summit and reiterated India’s dedication to advancing global peace, prosperity, and sustainability.
