During the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow does not seek Ukraine’s unconditional surrender and considers Russians and Ukrainians to be ‘one people.’ He reiterated his belief that Russia does not intend to destroy Kyiv while emphasizing the need to recognize the existing realities on the ground. Putin addressed questions about Moscow’s broader military objectives, including whether they would extend beyond the territories incorporated after the 2022 referendums. He clarified that Russia has never denied Ukraine’s right to independence but also didn’t rule out taking the city of Sumy. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed skepticism, stating that Russia is ‘not in the mood’ for a ceasefire.
