In Kujanga, Jagatsinghpur district, an accountant employed at the Block Education Office (BEO) was apprehended by Odisha Vigilance on Thursday. The arrest followed allegations of the accountant accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a teacher. According to official reports, Suryakanta Swain was caught red-handed in his office while accepting the bribe. The money was demanded in exchange for processing the teacher’s house building advance of Rs 1,50,000, which had already been sanctioned. Swain had been delaying the bill’s preparation without justification, demanding the sum for its release. Facing no other option, the teacher reported the matter to Vigilance authorities. Subsequently, Vigilance officers conducted a raid, capturing the accountant with the bribe money, which was then recovered. Following the incident, searches are underway at two of Swain’s locations to investigate potential disproportionate assets. Vigilance has registered a case and is currently investigating the matter.
