Hamas has signaled a willingness to consider a ceasefire with Israel, but has not yet accepted a US-backed proposal put forward by former President Donald Trump. The group maintains its demand for a complete end to the war in Gaza. Trump announced on Tuesday that Israel had agreed to terms for a 60-day ceasefire, urging Hamas to accept the deal. Hamas responded by reiterating its demand for a war’s end, casting doubt on the possibility of a truce. A Hamas delegation was expected to meet with mediators in Cairo to discuss the proposal. Negotiations have previously stalled over disagreements on how the war should conclude. Hamas seeks a full Israeli withdrawal and an end to the war in exchange for the release of hostages, while Israel demands Hamas’ surrender and disarmament. The latest proposal includes a partial Israeli withdrawal and increased humanitarian aid. Trump has issued warnings, stating that the deal is Hamas’s best option. The conflict continues to devastate Gaza, with recent Israeli airstrikes resulting in casualties. The war began in October 2023 with a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, leading to widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
