Authorities in Ranchi, Jharkhand, have uncovered a significant brown sugar operation, with connections repeatedly traced back to Sasaram, Bihar. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed, leading to the apprehension of several individuals involved in the drug trade in Bihar. The investigation exposed an interstate gang. The operation was reportedly headed by a 65-year-old woman identified as Mohini Sharma, also known as Mohini Devi, who is considered the main suspect. Based on her information, four other individuals linked to the brown sugar trade were arrested. The arrested individuals include Mohini Sharma (65), Sumit Tirkey (22), Paras Kumar alias ‘Golu’ (25), and Mohammad Ismail (29), along with a minor. DSP Prakash Soy of the Kotwali police station reported that Ranchi’s SSP, Chandan Sinha, received a tip-off about Mohini Devi, who was allegedly running a brown sugar purchase and sale operation from her rented residence, managing a drug network. A team was assembled under the leadership of the Kotwali DSP. During a raid on Mohini Sharma’s home, approximately 50 packets of brown sugar and a smartphone were seized. This arrest follows the earlier arrest of Ruby Devi alias ‘Bhabhi Ji,’ a resident of Sasaram, Bihar, by Ranchi police in June of this year. During the investigation, it was discovered that Ruby Devi’s entire family was involved in the drug trade. Several cases were registered against her at the Sukhdevnagar police station in Ranchi. The arrest of the 65-year-old woman, ‘Dadi Amma,’ marks another instance of the ongoing crackdown on the brown sugar trade.
