Nepal has ordered telecom operators to immediately block the messaging platform Telegram, citing its alleged use in facilitating online fraud and money laundering activities. The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) issued a directive late Friday afternoon, instructing service providers to restrict access to the app. The regulatory body did not provide specific figures on the number of cases. This action makes Nepal the latest country to ban Telegram, known for its encrypted messaging service. Earlier, Vietnam also took similar action, citing concerns over harmful content. The decision follows increased scrutiny after the use of Telegram was discovered during the hacking of a major online transaction software used by Nepali banks. With a significant internet penetration rate, Nepal joins a global conversation about the app’s security and data privacy.
