The Kerala High Court has prohibited the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including cloud-based platforms such as ChatGPT, for issuing judicial orders. The court has issued explicit instructions to judicial officers and other relevant parties, emphasizing the need to avoid AI-generated conclusions in judgments or orders. Strict action will be taken for any violations of the guidelines. The court’s decision stems from concerns about the potential for errors and the importance of ensuring accuracy in legal proceedings. Training programs, organized by the Judicial Academy or the High Court, are recommended to ensure proper utilization of approved AI tools. Furthermore, monitoring of AI tools at every stage is mandated, along with mandatory reporting of any malfunctions to the IT Department of the High Court. This directive marks a significant step in regulating AI’s role in the judiciary. Separately, the court had previously nullified the State Transport Commissioner’s driving license exam reforms, following a petition from driving schools, deeming the changes as restrictive and exceeding state jurisdiction.
