Amidst the political climate leading up to the Bihar assembly elections, the Nitish Kumar government is making several announcements. Following the recent decision to increase pensions for journalists, the government has now introduced a significant initiative for sanitation workers. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered the formation of the Bihar State Sanitation Workers Commission. This announcement was made via a post on his social media handle, X.
Chief Minister Kumar stated that the commission is designed to safeguard the rights, welfare, rehabilitation, and social upliftment of sanitation workers in Bihar. The commission will also oversee grievance redressal and monitor various welfare schemes related to sanitation workers. The commission will consist of a chairman, a vice-chairman, and five members, with one position reserved for a woman or a transgender person. This body aims to integrate marginalized communities engaged in sanitation work into the mainstream and contribute to their social and economic development. Prior announcements included increased pensions for journalists and a plan for free electricity for households up to 125 units starting August 1, 2025, benefiting 1.67 crore families across the state.
