OneCard recently issued a significant alert to its customers, warning them about a new scam called WhatsApp Screen Mirroring Fraud. Many individuals have fallen victim to this fraud due to a lack of awareness. If you become ensnared in this trap, your bank account could be emptied, and your personal information could be stolen.
WhatsApp Screen Mirroring Fraud involves fraudsters deceptively enabling screen sharing on WhatsApp. Once screen sharing is activated, the scammers can view all your sensitive information, including OTPs, bank details, passwords, and messages.
This fraud typically begins with the scammer posing as an employee of a bank or financial company. They claim there’s an issue with your account and instruct you to share your screen. The scammer then guides you through the process of enabling screen sharing, often feigning difficulty in viewing your screen. They then request a WhatsApp video call.
As soon as you initiate screen sharing, the scammer gains live access to your mobile screen. They may then use a transaction verification pretext to deceive you. Upon entering an OTP or PIN, that information is immediately transmitted to the fraudster.
Another method used is the installation of a keylogger malware app on your phone. This app records everything you type. Many banking websites offer on-screen keyboards to prevent keyloggers from capturing your input. Through this method, your bank passwords and social media passwords can be stolen.
Once the scammer has all your information, they can withdraw money from your bank account, conduct unauthorized transactions, and use your identity to commit other frauds.
