The Kolhan region of Jharkhand is grappling with a significant leadership void following the recent death of Ramdas Soren, the state’s Education Minister. Soren’s passing, which occurred at Apollo Hospital in Delhi on August 15, 2025, marks the second major loss for the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party in a short period. The party is still reeling from the death of former Central President Shibu Soren. These events have raised critical questions about the future of JMM’s influence in the Kolhan division, which encompasses the districts of East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Saraikela-Kharsawan. The JMM has been a dominant force in this area. Ramdas Soren’s death follows the passing of Jagannath Mahto in April 2023, a prominent figure also known as ‘Tiger’. His death has led to a period of mourning for the JMM, with the party now facing challenges in maintaining its strength and influence in the region.
