Director Ruchir Arun’s five-part series, Court Kacheri, emerges as a pleasant surprise, thoughtfully constructed and effectively presented. The performances are particularly noteworthy, with actors embodying their roles with a natural, lived-in quality rather than overt acting. The courtroom scenes are consistently engaging, setting it apart from other legal dramas. The series features a compelling cast, including a sarcastic female judge played by Tulika Banerjee and S.K. Batra as a presiding judge, adding depth and intrigue to the narrative. The series cleverly subverts expectations, offering a fresh perspective on familiar themes. Unlike some legal dramas, Court Kacheri avoids forced attempts at cleverness, maintaining a subtle, humorous tone. The characters are well-developed, with even minor roles leaving a lasting impact. The series explores a father-son dynamic, mirroring the themes of the film Alaap, with the legal profession at its core. Pawan Malhotra delivers a brilliant performance as a small-town lawyer, while Puneet Batra, the series’ primary writer, shines as the devoted Suraj, adding emotional depth to the story. Ultimately, Court Kacheri offers a compelling look at the legal system, celebrating its relevance despite its flaws.
