Bangladesh finds itself entangled in a complex situation following a deal with Russia for two helicopters. The purchase, initiated by the Awami League government, has become problematic due to US sanctions against Russian entities. Approximately Tk 4 billion was earmarked for the deal, with Tk 2.98 billion already paid. The acquisition of the Mi-171A2 model helicopters was intended to bolster counter-terrorism efforts and enhance police capabilities in remote areas. However, the imposition of US sanctions on JSC Russian Helicopters, the manufacturer, has complicated the delivery. Canceling the deal poses a significant financial loss, while proceeding with it could strain diplomatic relations with the United States. The helicopters are currently stored in Russia, incurring maintenance costs. The government is now attempting to persuade the US that the helicopters are intended for civilian use, including disaster management, to mitigate potential repercussions on US-Bangladesh relations.
