The Independence Day eve of 2025 witnessed a major clash at the box office with the release of ‘War 2,’ starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, and Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie.’ Both films, highly anticipated releases, drew large audiences and generated impressive revenue, becoming two of the year’s biggest hits. However, after a strong opening weekend, both ‘War 2’ and ‘Coolie’ experienced a decline in collections as the first week concluded.
‘War 2,’ featuring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, opened with a powerful response, earning Rs 52 crore on Day 1, followed by Rs 57.85 crore on Day 2, reflecting an 11.25% increase. However, collections decreased to Rs 33.25 crore on Day 3 and slightly further to Rs 32.65 crore on Day 4, bringing the extended weekend total close to Rs 176 crore. The film saw a significant drop on Day 5, earning Rs 8.75 crore (down 73.20%), but recovered somewhat on Day 6 with Rs 9 crore. Early estimates indicate Day 7 collections of approximately Rs 5.50 crore, resulting in a first-week total of around Rs 199 crore across all languages (Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu). Despite the weekday drop, ‘War 2’ maintained a strong performance in its opening week, solidifying its position as a major box office event of 2025.
‘War 2,’ a sequel to the 2019 blockbuster ‘War,’ was released on August 14, 2025. Hrithik Roshan reprises his role as Agent Kabir after a six-year hiatus, with NTR Jr. joining the franchise as Agent Vikram. Anil Kapoor and Ashutosh Rana also play key roles.
Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ had a successful opening week. The movie started with a massive Rs 65 crore on Day 1, with Tamil Nadu contributing Rs 44.5 crore, Hindi Rs 4.5 crore, Telugu Rs 15.5 crore, and Kannada Rs 0.5 crore. Day 2 saw a decrease of 15.77%, earning Rs 54.75 crore, followed by Rs 39.5 crore on Day 3 and Rs 35.25 crore on Day 4, reaching over Rs 194 crore for the extended weekend. The film experienced the usual Monday drop with Rs 12 crore and further declined to Rs 9.5 crore on Day 6. Early estimates suggest Day 7 at Rs 6.5 crore, resulting in a first-week total of a staggering Rs 222.5 crore across all languages. Despite the weekday declines, ‘Coolie’ has become one of 2025’s biggest Tamil blockbusters.
The plot centers on Deva, a former gold smuggler turned coolie, who seeks to regain his former glory by reviving his old gang with stolen technology hidden in vintage golden watches, leading to unforeseen consequences. The film also stars Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Rachita Ram, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, Kanna Ravi, Monisha Blessy, and Kaali Venkat, with Aamir Khan in a cameo role. It is produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures.
