Shreyas Iyer’s cricketing trajectory may be leading him toward a significant role, even though he may not be part of India’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 squad. Reports suggest that the right-handed batsman is being considered as the next ODI captain once Rohit Sharma concludes his tenure.
Iyer has quietly built a strong ODI record over the past four years. From 2021 to 2025, he averaged over 45, scoring 14 half-centuries. He delivered crucial performances in India’s 2023 ODI World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy campaigns.
Notably, Iyer has addressed India’s persistent No. 4 batting position issue, a spot that had troubled the team. His ability to stabilize innings while accelerating when needed makes him a dependable batter in the format.
Iyer has prior captaincy experience, leading the Delhi Capitals to their first IPL final in 2020 and lifting the trophy with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. He also led Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. His calm demeanor, guidance to younger players, and tactical acumen have been praised by former players.
While Rohit Sharma has not yet announced his ODI retirement, the selectors appear to be planning for a seamless transition with the 2027 World Cup cycle approaching. If everything unfolds as anticipated, Iyer could represent the new era in Indian ODI cricket.
