During a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, former U.S. President Donald Trump made a surprising remark concerning Russian President Vladimir Putin. The tournament, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the largest in the competition’s history, featuring 48 teams and matches across three nations. Trump shared a photograph of himself with Putin, taken in Alaska, and suggested that Putin might attend the global football event. Trump stated, “I believe he (Putin) will be coming (to the 2026 FIFA World Cup), depending on what happens. He’s been very respectful of me and of our country but not so respectful of others.” The statement came shortly after Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, adding that the next two weeks could be crucial in determining its direction. Despite the serious political undertones, lighter moments were present during the meeting. Trump playfully inquired about Team USA’s chances of winning the trophy and joked about taking the trophy home. The official draw for the tournament is scheduled to be held in Washington this December. This will be the first World Cup hosted by three nations, and it will feature an expanded format with 48 teams, up from the traditional 32. The 1994 World Cup, hosted by the United States, significantly increased the sport’s popularity in North America. The 2026 edition is poised to capture global attention, extending beyond the football field.
