Torrential rainfall has caused severe distress in Pakistan’s Punjab province. The administration has issued an alert for the next 48 hours, anticipating continued heavy rain. In response to rising water levels in the rivers, approximately 20,000 people have been moved to safer locations from the flood-affected districts in the last 24 hours. Several villages in Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, and Vehari have been submerged. These evacuations primarily concern those living near the Indus, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Jhelum rivers. The high alert is in effect in Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, and Vehari districts. Relief camps are providing medicines, vaccinations, and essential supplies. People are urged to avoid the rivers and to contact helpline 1129 in case of emergencies. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) indicates that emergency operations are underway in several districts due to the forecast of active monsoon until August 27. The situation in Ganda Singh Wala is critical, with the Sutlej River exceeding the danger mark. Thousands have been displaced. Relief camps are providing basic facilities to the displaced. Separately, a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in Gilgit-Baltistan has caused devastation, leaving over 3,000 people homeless in Talidas village of Ghizer district. This is reportedly the largest glacial incident in Pakistan since 2010.
