The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced a significant revision to the registration renewal fees for vehicles aged 20 years or older. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce pollution by encouraging the retirement of older vehicles. Owners of these older vehicles will now face considerably higher re-registration costs, incentivizing them to either upgrade their vehicles or pay the increased fees. Notably, vehicles between 15 and 20 years old will not experience any change in their renewal fees. The policy specifically targets vehicles manufactured before 2005 that do not comply with BSII emission standards, prompting owners to consider newer, more environmentally friendly options.
The new fee structure dramatically increases the cost across the board. For instance, the re-registration fee for Indian-made cars has doubled, rising from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000. Similarly, owners of Indian-made bikes and scooters will now pay ₹2,000, up from ₹1,000. The increase is most pronounced for imported vehicles: the cost of re-registering a 20-year-old imported car has jumped from ₹40,000 to ₹80,000, while imported two-wheelers will see their fees increase to between ₹10,000 and ₹20,000. The policy also includes increased fees for three-wheelers (from ₹2,500 to ₹5,000) and other vehicles, including commercial vehicles (from ₹6,000 to ₹12,000).
