During a discussion concerning the imposition of 50% tariffs by the United States on Indian goods, Fiji’s Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, shared a significant statement. He recounted informing Prime Minister Narendra Modi that while some may not be pleased, Modi’s stature allows him to navigate these uncomfortable circumstances. Rabuka made these remarks after delivering a lecture titled ‘Ocean of Peace’ at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) in Sapru House, where he detailed his conversation with PM Modi.
Rabuka arrived in Delhi on a three-day visit aimed at strengthening Fiji’s ties with India across sectors like maritime security, trade, health, digital technology, and capacity building. Both nations formulated a plan of action to enhance defense relations and agreed to collaborate for a peaceful and inclusive Indo-Pacific. Modi and Rabuka engaged in talks to broaden overall bilateral cooperation.
Responding to a question at the ICWA lecture about his discussions with various world leaders regarding the ‘Ocean of Peace’ perspective, Rabuka noted that he hadn’t had any personal conversations with the U.S. President. He mentioned requesting a bilateral meeting with the Russian President and having one with the British Prime Minister. He added that during their conversation, PM Modi echoed their sentiments and concepts. Without going into detail, Rabuka mentioned that the ongoing developments were impacting relations with the US, specifically regarding recent tariff announcements, and conveyed to Modi that some people were not pleased but that Modi’s persona could withstand such situations.
