A recent intelligence report has revealed a significant terror threat targeting the US Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, causing heightened security concerns. The plot involved plans to target the embassy, including the potential kidnapping and murder of both Bangladeshi staff members and a religious figure. The security agencies’ vigilance thwarted the planned attack, resulting in the arrest of Shamin Mahfuz, linked to the militant group Jama’atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya.
The terrorists, affiliated with Jama’atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya and Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), were reportedly conducting reconnaissance near the embassy under the guise of playing cricket. The intelligence suggested the attack was intended to be highly destructive. Following the threat, the US Embassy in Washington D.C. engaged in immediate discussions with the Bangladesh government. Meetings were held with key officials, including the Army Chief, National Security Advisor, and Home Advisor, to address the concerns and reinforce security cooperation. Discussions covered counter-terrorism operations, law enforcement, and online safety for women.
Shamin Mahfuz, arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-11) in Narayanganj, has a history of involvement in terrorist activities, with previous arrests in 2011, 2014, and 2023. He is now accused of connections to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Several others, including Engineer Imran Haider and Rezaul Karim Abrar, were also implicated, facing charges of undergoing training in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and preparing for jihadist activities.
The US Embassy in Dhaka has initiated discussions with the Bangladesh police to establish a special force under SPEAR (Special Program for Embassy Augmentation and Response). This force aims to provide rapid response capabilities to ensure the safety and security of the embassy and its personnel during emergencies.
