The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has launched the beta version of ‘Adi Vaani,’ India’s first AI-based tribal language translator. This initiative, developed under the Tribal Pride Year, aims to revolutionize the perspective on language and education in tribal areas. Currently available on the Google Play Store, with an iOS version and a web platform to follow, Adi Vaani seeks to bridge the communication gap between tribal and non-tribal communities and preserve endangered tribal languages using AI technology. It is designed to be a foundation for a large language model for tribal languages in the future, combining advanced technology and community participation to protect and revitalize tribal languages and cultures. The tool offers real-time translation between Hindi/English and tribal languages, interactive language education for students, and digital preservation of folklore and cultural heritage. It will also facilitate digital literacy, health communication, and civic engagement within tribal communities, as well as disseminate information about government schemes and important speeches. The beta version includes languages like Santhali (Odisha), Bhili (Madhya Pradesh), Mundari (Jharkhand), and Gondi (Chhattisgarh), with Kui and Garo languages planned for the next phase.
