At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the gathering, indirectly criticizing Pakistan on terrorism and condemning protectionist, unilateral, and hegemonic approaches, a veiled reference to the United States. Modi emphasized India’s consistent stance against cross-border terrorism, separatism, and extremism.
Commencing his address, PM Modi expressed his honor in speaking at the esteemed assembly in Tianjin, a city symbolizing progress and connectivity. On behalf of India’s 1.4 billion people, he extended greetings to all leaders and representatives. He thanked President Xi for hosting the summit and for the grand hospitality. The SCO has expanded from its inception with six members to ten full members, representing nearly half the world’s population and a significant portion of the global economy. India is committed to the organization’s role in promoting regional stability, security, and prosperity.
He highlighted the significant role SCO has played in strengthening cooperation and mutual connection in the Asian region over the past 24 years. India, as an active member, has always played a positive role. India’s vision and policy regarding SCO are based on three main pillars: Security, Connectivity, and Opportunity.
The Prime Minister, without naming Pakistan, addressed the challenges of terrorism, separatism, and extremism. He underscored terrorism as a shared challenge for all humanity. No country or society can consider itself safe from it, hence India has emphasized solidarity in the fight against terrorism. SCO has also played a significant role in this. This year, India has taken the initiative to combat terrorist organizations while leading the Joint Information Operations. He expressed gratitude for the support on this, particularly in the fight against terror financing.
Modi stated that India has been suffering from the scourge of terrorism for the last 4 decades, resulting in loss of life and numerous orphans. He made reference to the recent heinous act of terrorism in Pahalgam. He expressed his gratitude to the friendly countries that stood with India during this difficult time. This attack was an open challenge to every country and individual believing in humanity. It is natural to question whether open support for terrorism by certain countries can be acceptable. It must be clearly stated in one voice that no double standards on terrorism will be acceptable.
