Former US President Donald Trump made significant claims regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, asserting he would bring peace. Despite his efforts after assuming office, he was unsuccessful. Witnessing Trump’s failures, the world now looks toward PM Modi for a peaceful resolution in Ukraine. Leaders ranging from Ukrainian President Zelensky to the European Union (EU) are placing their hopes in PM Modi. The world observed a clear message at the SCO platform, indicating that India could be the facilitator if a ceasefire and peace are desired in Ukraine. PM Modi could potentially be a peace envoy. On Thursday, as European leaders discussed peace in Ukraine with Zelensky in Paris, the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, held a telephonic conversation with PM Modi.
Following the discussion, the EU stated in a social media post that India plays a crucial role in ending the war and paving the way for peace. They welcome India’s continued cooperation with Ukrainian President Zelensky. The EU noted the global security consequences of the war in Ukraine, which would undermine economic stability and pose a threat to the entire world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reiterated New Delhi’s continuous support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha is on a visit to India. On Thursday, he met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Following the meeting, Jaishankar stated on social media that India supports the early termination of this conflict and the establishment of lasting peace.
In recent weeks, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky have spoken with PM Modi via phone to discuss efforts to end the conflict. The issue was also raised during the meeting between PM Modi and Putin at the SCO meeting in China this week.
India did not publicly condemn Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. It has repeatedly called for direct dialogue between Russia and Ukraine to find a lasting solution to the conflict. PM Modi has also told Putin and Zelensky that there can be no solution on the battlefield, and talks will not succeed under the shadow of guns.
Despite Western pressure, India has maintained its ties with Russia. Although PM Modi has occasionally criticized Vladimir Putin’s war, he has also avoided an aggressive tone. India has carefully preserved its privileged strategic partnership with Russia.
PM Modi has also shown interest in peace-building efforts and has met with the Ukrainian President on numerous occasions. Since the start of the conflict, India has increased imports of Russian oil at discounted rates, and it has also sent medical supplies, equipment, and relief materials to Ukraine under humanitarian aid. India has also made other concrete efforts to support Ukraine.
