Ongoing protests spearheaded by Nepal’s Gen Z are challenging the government’s actions, particularly a controversial social media ban. The demonstrations, fueled by demands for accountability and transparency, have spread across the country. A striking aspect of the protests is the widespread use of the ‘Jolly Roger’ flag, a symbol from the popular anime series ‘One Piece.’ This flag, featuring a skull and crossbones wearing a straw hat, represents themes of freedom, personal conviction, and solidarity, resonating with the protesters’ desire to challenge authority. The flag’s presence highlights the youth’s resolve. The protests, which began on September 8 in major cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj, were sparked by the government’s social media ban, justified by concerns about tax revenue and cybersecurity. The ban ignited public anger, leading to demands to end corruption and improve governance. The government lifted the ban later. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned, and other ministers also stepped down. The protests, however, turned violent with police using water cannons, tear gas, and live rounds to disperse the crowds.
