Sergio Gor, the next US ambassador to India, stated on Thursday that convincing India to halt purchases of Russian oil is a priority for the Trump administration. He also indicated that the distance between India and the US on a tariff agreement is not substantial. Gor said, “We are not very far apart on an agreement on these tariffs. Getting India to stop buying Russian oil is the top priority of this administration.” He added, “This will also include a hopeful, promising agreement. We are not very far from this agreement right now. In fact, they are negotiating the details of this agreement.” He further mentioned that the issue could be resolved in the coming weeks. Gor also described India as a “strategic partner” and emphasized the importance of the relationship in advancing US interests, promoting regional stability, and bolstering shared security interests. Despite tariff tensions, he highlighted the strong friendship between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, noting their “incredible relationship.” Currently serving as the Director of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, Gor was nominated by President Trump in August to be the next US ambassador to India. His appointment is pending confirmation by the US Senate. Introducing Gor to the committee, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned he has known Gor for a long time, further noting the US has “one of the best relationships in the world” with India.
