Nepal is facing a severe political and social crisis, triggered by widespread anger over government failings, corruption, and increasing inequality. The movement, primarily driven by Gen Z, led to the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. With the government dissolved, the country is without a parliament or cabinet. As the situation deteriorated, the army intervened, imposing a curfew and initiating negotiations with protesters, though tensions remain high. Over 30 fatalities and more than 1,000 injuries have resulted from police actions. Government buildings, private residences of leaders, and tourist hotels were targeted and set ablaze, including the Parliament building. The protests were fueled by digital resentment turning into street demonstrations, with protesters targeting the children of wealthy and powerful leaders, known as ‘nepo kids,’ and highlighting their lavish lifestyles on social media. The crisis underscores deep-rooted corruption and inequality within Nepal, exacerbated by scandals and a perceived lack of accountability. With the Prime Minister’s resignation and military intervention, Nepal stands at a critical juncture, with the mass movement exposing the fragility of the political system amidst rising inequality and institutional corruption.
