Actress Poonam Pandey is set to portray Mandodari, the wife of Ravana, in the upcoming Luv Kush Ramlila at Delhi’s Red Fort grounds. This casting decision has ignited opposition. The Delhi unit of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), through its Delhi state minister Surendra Gupta, has voiced concerns regarding Pandey’s selection for the role of ‘Mandodari.’ Gupta has sent a letter to the Luv Kush Ramlila committee, urging them to reconsider the decision. In his letter, Gupta emphasized that Ramlila is not merely a theatrical performance but a vibrant component of Indian society and its traditions. The organization also referenced the cultural significance of Ramlila as recognized by UNESCO.
In the letter, Surendra Gupta highlighted cultural and ethical sensitivities, appealing that character selection in Ramayana-based productions should consider cultural appropriateness and the sentiments of devotees, not solely acting ability. The character of ‘Mandodari’ is considered a symbol of virtue, dignity, restraint, and the ideal of a devoted wife. Therefore, the choice of the actress to portray this role should reflect these ideals. The letter explicitly stated concerns about Poonam Pandey’s public image and past controversies, which could potentially cause confusion or outrage among devotees. The VHP suggested that the committee reconsider its decision and select an actress with a traditional theatrical background or a public record consistent with cultural expectations. Surendra Kumar Gupta stated that the organization’s objective is not to personally oppose any artist but to protect the cultural validity and the faith of devotees associated with public events connected to sacred texts like the Ramayana. He further added that the primary aim of Ramlila is to promote religion, morality, and traditions, and every decision should reflect this sentiment. Gupta concluded the letter by expressing the Vishva Hindu Parishad’s hope that the Luv Kush Ramlila committee understands the seriousness of the matter and will arrive at a respectful resolution.
