The highly anticipated drama ‘Homebound’, featuring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, has been released in Indian cinemas. Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and produced by Dharma Productions, the film has already garnered international acclaim, with screenings at prestigious festivals such as Cannes 2025 and the Toronto International Film Festival. The film’s release coincides with the strong performance of Pawan Kalyan’s ‘OG’, which has generated significant buzz. The critical question is how ‘Homebound’ will perform at the box office.
Industry analysts predict a modest opening in India, estimating a collection of approximately Rs 0.75 crore to 1.25 crore on its first day. The film’s promotional efforts have been limited, with fewer public events and star appearances, which could contribute to a lower initial impact compared to larger commercial releases. Despite the international recognition and positive word of mouth, ‘Homebound’s’ opening may be overshadowed by ‘OG’s’ dominance. ‘OG’ has demonstrated a robust performance, earning approximately Rs 21 crore in early previews, followed by Rs 63.75 crore on day one and Rs 19.24 crore on day two, resulting in a total of around Rs 103.99 crore in its first three days.
‘Homebound’ might not achieve a blockbuster opening, but its compelling narrative and international praise could contribute to its success over time.
The film tells the story of two childhood friends from a small village in North India aspiring to become police officers for respect and dignity. Their journey is fraught with challenges that test their friendship and choices. Director Neeraj Ghaywan describes it as a heartfelt story about friendship, survival, and the strength of individuals often overlooked by society. The film received a nine-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival 2025.
