Team India, after defeating Pakistan, emerged as champions of the Asia Cup but did not receive the trophy immediately afterward. The Indian team refused to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Although the ACC chairman traditionally has the right to present the trophy, the situation was complicated. Naqvi is also the chairman of the PCB and, importantly, the Interior Minister in the Pakistani government. The Indian team was hesitant to receive the trophy from a Pakistani minister, particularly given the current strained relations between the two countries.
The BCCI found Naqvi’s behavior unacceptable. Despite the initial refusal, the BCCI suggested that the trophy be presented to the Indian team by the vice president of the Emirates Cricket Board instead of Naqvi. However, Naqvi, as the most responsible figure for the Asia Cup tournament, took the trophy back to his hotel.
The BCCI is now prepared to take action regarding Naqvi’s conduct. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia initially gave Mohsin Naqvi a chance to rectify his actions. He expressed hope that the trophy would be returned to the Indian team promptly. However, if this does not happen, the BCCI has stated that it will take further action. Devjit Saikia mentioned that the BCCI might lodge a protest and complaint during the ICC conference scheduled to be held in Dubai in November. This implies that Mohsin Naqvi has until October to return the trophy to India.
In the final match of the 2025 Asia Cup, India defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets. India won the toss and put Pakistan in to bat, restricting them to 146 runs in 20 overs. In response, India achieved the target of 147 runs, losing 5 wickets in the 20th over.
