In a significant development following the Karur stampede, Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) district secretary Mathiyazhagan has been arrested. The arrest, made on Sunday, is linked to the tragic incident that claimed the lives of 41 individuals and injured 60 others. Mathiyazhagan faces charges including murder, culpable homicide, and endangering public safety. The arrest stems from an investigation into a TVK rally where a massive crowd surge led to a stampede. According to the FIR, Mathiyazhagan is the primary accused. Other key TVK officials, including state general secretary Bussy Anand and deputy general secretary Nirmal Kumar, are also named in the FIR. They face charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, related to culpable homicide, endangering life, and disobedience to orders. The FIR holds the party and actor-politician Vijay accountable for the incident, citing the delayed appearance of Vijay as a contributing factor to the increased crowd size and subsequent collapse of structures, leading to the stampede.
