The Bombay High Court has ruled in favor of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle in a personality rights case. The court issued an order on Thursday, protecting her personality rights. The court has prohibited various entities from misusing the singer’s personal rights, such as her name and images. Even with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), her name and image cannot be used.
The court stated that using AI tools to imitate a celebrity’s voice without permission violates their identity rights. Justice Arif S. Doctor said, “Providing AI tools to change any celebrity’s voice to their voice without their permission would be a violation of that celebrity’s personality rights. Such tools promote the unauthorized appropriation and manipulation of a celebrity’s voice, which is a major component of their personal identity and public persona.”
