Russia has refuted reports suggesting it is providing RD-93MA engines for the JF-17 Thunder Block-III fighter jets to Pakistan. These reports, which surfaced in the media, have been directly contradicted by Russian sources. The denial comes amid speculation and discussion surrounding the relationship between Russia, Pakistan, and India, particularly concerning defense cooperation.
A Russian source cited in the reports emphasized that there has been no confirmation of supplying RD-93MA engines to Pakistan. The source suggested that such a deal wouldn’t align with Russia’s strategic interests, especially considering the close relationship between Russia and India. This statement underscores the sensitivity of the situation and the potential implications for the existing collaborations between Russia and India.
The reports gained traction following an earlier claim regarding Russia’s supposed decision to provide engines for the JF-17 Thunder fighter jet, a 4.5 generation stealth fighter jointly developed by Pakistan and China. The JF-17 is the mainstay of the Pakistan Air Force, with over 150 units in service. The aircraft’s reliance on the Russian RD-93MA engine has made Russia’s role significant in the modernization of the Pakistan Air Force. However, the recent denial from Russia has altered the landscape of this narrative.
This development also coincides with the upcoming potential visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India in December. Furthermore, Putin has been quoted expressing confidence in his discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The reports also address the recent imposition of tariffs by the United States on Indian crude oil purchases from Russia, and Putin has stated that India would not succumb to any pressure.
