The Supreme Court has mandated a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the tragic stampede in Karur that resulted in 41 fatalities and numerous injuries. A three-member committee, led by Justice Ajay Rastogi and comprising two IPS officers from outside Tamil Nadu, has been established to oversee the CBI’s investigation. This decision came after hearing a plea from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), seeking a court-monitored probe. The court acknowledged the fundamental rights implications of the incident and expressed its intent to address concerns by forming the monitoring committee. The CBI is now tasked with submitting monthly progress reports to this committee. The apex court also noted potential inconsistencies in previous High Court rulings concerning the case, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and transparent investigation.
