FIFA President Gianni Infantino made a surprise appearance alongside US President Donald Trump at a Gaza peace summit held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. While the event was expected to host only political figures, Infantino’s presence drew considerable attention.
Infantino revealed that he was personally invited by President Trump. He stated that FIFA is prepared to assist in any way possible to help the peace process achieve a successful outcome. This participation underscores Infantino’s growing engagement with the Israeli-Gaza conflict.
Recently, Infantino has been more vocal about the situation, advocating for football’s role in promoting peace in the Middle East. Following a recent ceasefire brokered by the US, Infantino praised the deal and even suggested President Trump deserved a Nobel Peace Prize for his pivotal role.
At the summit, Infantino presented football as a source of hope and unity. He pledged FIFA’s commitment to rebuilding Gaza’s football infrastructure as part of post-war recovery efforts. This includes providing assistance with rebuilding pitches, organizing competitions, and establishing a fund for football facilities in Palestine. Infantino emphasized that football offers hope to children, especially in challenging times.
The connection between Infantino and Trump dates back to 2018, with several public appearances since then. Their ongoing relationship has been visible, including a meeting in the Oval Office where Infantino presented Trump with a replica World Cup trophy. Infantino’s relocation to Miami, Trump’s hometown, further facilitates their continued engagement and proximity to North American World Cup activities.
