As India gears up for the first ODI against Australia, newly appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill has addressed the public perception of his relationship with former captain Rohit Sharma. Gill emphasized that the dynamic between him and Sharma remains unchanged, fostering a supportive environment for his captaincy debut.
‘The narrative outside is different, but among us, nothing has changed. Everything is the same as it was before, and that is very helpful,’ Gill stated during a press conference. He highlighted the invaluable guidance he receives from senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. ‘Whatever they feel–their experience, whatever they have learned, whether by reading the pitch or any situation–I go to them and ask what they think, how they would do it if they were in my place,’ Gill explained.
This ODI series marks the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the Indian jersey for the first time since the ICC Champions Trophy Final earlier this year, adding another layer of excitement for fans.
Gill expressed his enthusiasm for continuing the legacy of distinguished Indian captains such as MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. ‘Definitely very exciting, big shoes for me to fill in carrying the legacy forward… I had numerous conversations with Rohit and Virat about how to take the team forward, and those leanings and experiences will help our team,’ he remarked.
The first ODI is scheduled for Sunday at Perth’s Optus Stadium. This series also signifies Gill’s first assignment as ODI skipper, a role he has embraced following Rohit Sharma’s transition. India’s tour of Australia includes three ODIs and five T20Is, with the T20 series commencing later.
Gill has recently taken on significant leadership responsibilities, including captaining India in a demanding five-match Test tour of England, where he also excelled with a record-breaking 754 runs. His recent captaincy stint in Test cricket, ending in a 2-2 draw, showcased his leadership potential.
