Delhi is on the cusp of conducting its first-ever cloud seeding trial, a scientific endeavor to combat the city’s severe air pollution crisis. The Delhi government has confirmed plans for this innovative experiment, contingent upon favorable weather conditions. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa indicated that a crucial review meeting was scheduled to assess the feasibility of the operation. A specialized flight is en route from Kanpur, and its deployment for cloud seeding will proceed only if the atmospheric conditions are deemed suitable. This initiative is a significant part of the government’s broader strategy to mitigate the worsening air quality typically experienced during the winter months. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta hailed the project as a ‘necessary and pioneering step’ towards addressing persistent environmental challenges. The government is eager to explore the effectiveness of cloud seeding in managing the acute pollution levels that plague the capital. The India Meteorological Department has forecast a window of opportunity with potential cloud formations expected between October 28 and 30. If conditions align, the city could witness its first experience of artificial rainfall as early as October 29. A preliminary test flight was recently conducted successfully over the Burari area, involving the dispersal of small quantities of silver iodide and sodium chloride to gauge the aircraft’s seeding capabilities. While this test did not result in rain due to insufficient atmospheric moisture, it served as a vital step in preparation. IIT Kanpur, leading the project, confirmed the trial’s success in testing essential equipment and coordination. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has granted approval for these operations, with a Memorandum of Understanding in place to conduct multiple trials in northwest Delhi. All preparations are now finalized for this much-anticipated operation.
