The Indian Navy has officially welcomed INS Ikshak, its third Survey Vessel Large (SVL), into active service. Commissioned at the Naval Base in Kochi, this advanced vessel signifies a major leap forward in the nation’s hydrographic survey capabilities. INS Ikshak is designed to navigate deep oceans and uncharted territories, ensuring the safety of all mariners navigating the Indian Ocean region. A remarkable achievement in indigenous shipbuilding, the vessel boasts approximately 80% indigenous content by cost, including 100% indigenous steel from SAIL. This commitment to self-reliance, known as Aatmanirbhar Bharat, was highlighted during the commissioning ceremony, presided over by the Chief of the Naval Staff. The ship’s dual-role capability makes it exceptionally versatile, capable of conducting hydrographic and oceanographic surveys, acting as a platform for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, and even serving as a hospital ship when needed. Notably, INS Ikshak is the first of its kind to feature dedicated accommodation for women, reflecting the Navy’s progressive approach to inclusivity and modernization. Its integration will significantly enhance India’s maritime mapping accuracy and bolster national security along critical sea lanes, reinforcing the nation’s strategic reach.
