Vijayeta Basu, sister of Bollywood star Bipasha Basu, has been defrauded of approximately Rs 1.8 lakh through a sophisticated online scam. The incident occurred when she received a deceptive message regarding a parcel delivery. Believing the message to be legitimate, Vijayeta was prompted to enter her credit card details on a fake website to supposedly cover delivery charges.
Unbeknownst to her, this was a phishing attempt. Shortly after submitting her information, Vijayeta received a notification from her bank detailing a significant transaction. Her credit card had been used for a booking at the Hyatt Regency hotel in France, amounting to EUR 1,730.76, which converts to roughly Rs 1.79 lakh. The scam targeted her by exploiting the common expectation of needing to pay for parcel delivery.
Upon realizing the fraudulent nature of the transaction, Vijayeta acted swiftly. She immediately blocked her credit card to prevent further unauthorized charges. She then proceeded to file a complaint on the national cybercrime portal. A formal First Information Report (FIR) was subsequently lodged at the NM Joshi Marg Police Station in Mumbai on November 2, 2025. The police are investigating the case under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act, specifically 66(C) and 66(D), which deal with identity theft and cheating by personation using computer resources.
Vijayeta Basu, who works as a marketing manager, is now a victim of widespread cyber fraud tactics that prey on unsuspecting individuals. This incident highlights the persistent threat of online scams and the need for vigilance when encountering unexpected digital communications, especially those requesting personal or financial information.
