Despite a surprising semi-final exit from the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, former Australia head coach Matthew Mott believes the team is poised for a strong resurgence. The Australian side had an undefeated run in the group stages before falling to eventual champions India in a high-scoring semi-final. This marks the first time since 2009 that Australia has missed consecutive ICC event finals, following their semi-final loss in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. Mott, who guided Australia through a dominant period from 2018-2023, asserts that this setback is not a cause for concern and can serve as a powerful motivator. He highlighted the emergence of promising talents like Phoebe Litchfield, who impressed with a century in the semi-final and amassed 304 runs, second only to Ash Gardner’s 328 for the team. Mott emphasized that the squad’s balance and depth of match-winners remain exceptional, and that such disappointments can indeed propel teams to even greater achievements. He remains confident in Australia’s standing as the world’s best team, suggesting that India’s victory may even invigorate the sport globally.
