The Indian Army is set to receive a significant boost in its combat capabilities with the US approval of two military deals totaling USD 93 million. These acquisitions will enhance India’s precision-strike potential, allowing for the rapid and accurate neutralization of enemy armor.
The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency has cleared the sale of the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile system for USD 45.7 million. This advanced “fire-and-forget” weapon, known for its effectiveness in recent conflicts, will equip the Indian Army with 100 Javelin missiles and 25 command-launch units. Indian soldiers will gain the ability to engage targets at ranges exceeding two kilometers, with the missile autonomously tracking its objective after launch, enabling immediate cover for the operator.
A complementary USD 47.1 million deal involves up to 216 M982A1 Excalibur precision-guided artillery rounds. These GPS-guided munitions offer exceptional accuracy, capable of striking targets from significant distances with laser-like precision, transforming conventional artillery into surgical strike tools.
The Javelin system’s infrared guidance allows soldiers to fire and immediately seek cover, as the missile independently guides itself to its target, often exploiting weaker armor from above. Its versatility extends beyond tanks, making it effective against various armored vehicles and fortified positions, solidifying its status as a leading portable anti-tank weapon.
These procurements are designated to bolster India’s defense against present and future threats, while simultaneously strengthening the strategic alliance between the US and India. The acquisition will replenish existing stocks and expand the operational capacity and interoperability of Indian forces with US military equipment. This strategic enhancement underscores India’s advanced defensive and offensive capabilities, potentially altering the regional balance of power.
