India’s captain Shubman Gill is set to undergo a critical fitness test on Friday, a day before the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati. Gill sustained a neck injury during the first Test in Kolkata, which saw him miss the second innings and significantly impact India’s batting collapse. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and observation but discharged the following day.
Despite traveling with the team to Guwahati, Gill did not participate in Thursday’s training session. His availability for the must-win match, scheduled to start on November 22nd, remains uncertain. If Gill is declared unfit, Rishabh Pant is reportedly the leading candidate to captain the Indian side. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed his injury and stated he was responding well to treatment, with his participation to be decided based on the fitness evaluation. India aims to level the series after a 1-0 deficit, making Gill’s potential presence crucial for their chances.
