Sanju Samson has openly expressed his enthusiasm for playing under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad at the Chennai Super Kings. This comes after CSK confirmed Gaikwad will continue to lead the team for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. Samson, who recently joined CSK in a significant trade deal from the Rajasthan Royals, is embarking on a new chapter in his Indian Premier League career.
Having captained the Rajasthan Royals from 2021 to 2025, there was initial speculation about Samson potentially taking over leadership at CSK. However, the franchise has firmly backed Ruturaj Gaikwad as their long-term captain.
In a recent video interaction shared by CSK, Samson discussed his new role and his relationship with Gaikwad. He emphasized his willingness to play under the young skipper and highlighted their strong rapport.
“Rutu is a good friend of mine. He is the Captain and I want to play under his captaincy. I want to be with him as a leader,” Samson stated. This move to Chennai marks Samson’s first experience playing for the Super Kings, a decision that was reportedly discussed with the Rajasthan Royals towards the end of the IPL 2025 season.
The departure from Rajasthan Royals was influenced by the team’s challenging performance. Reports indicate that Samson was emotionally drained by the team’s disappointing season, which was their worst in 18 years. This personal toll contributed to his decision to seek a new environment.
The blockbuster trade also saw Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran move to the Rajasthan Royals. This trade represents a return for Jadeja, who began his IPL journey with RR, and a new beginning for Curran with the franchise. As Rajasthan Royals look ahead, they are considering Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Dhruv Jurel as potential captains for the 2027 season.
