Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has endorsed the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to appoint KL Rahul as the interim captain for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. This move comes as a consequence of regular skipper Shubman Gill’s unavailability due to a neck injury. The three-match ODI series is scheduled to commence after the conclusion of the ongoing Test matches, with games set for November 30, December 3, and December 6.
Kaif elaborated on his reasoning, suggesting that in the current scenario, KL Rahul emerges as the most logical choice. He acknowledged that Rohit Sharma, given his recent form and experience, could have continued as captain. However, Kaif noted the team’s apparent strategy of transitioning towards new leadership and providing opportunities to emerging talents.
“There’s no one else,” Kaif stated, explaining his perspective. He highlighted that while Rohit Sharma’s form warranted him continuing as captain, the team management seems inclined towards a transition. He also considered other potential candidates like Virat Kohli, who has stepped down from captaincy, and younger players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, and Ruturaj Gaikwad who are still establishing themselves, as well as Rishabh Pant’s return from injury.
Furthermore, Kaif pointed to KL Rahul’s prior experience in captaincy, particularly his stints in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This IPL captaincy record, he believes, will be beneficial for Rahul as he leads the side against the Proteas. Despite supporting the decision, Kaif expressed some surprise at Rohit Sharma, who was instrumental in building the team and backing Rahul previously, being relinquished of the captaincy even while being part of the squad.
