In a significant policy shift, Aadhaar cards are no longer recognized as valid birth certificates in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. The Planning Department in UP has officially notified all relevant government departments about this change, emphasizing that Aadhaar lacks the necessary information to serve as a birth certificate. This decision comes as both states crack down on the misuse of identification documents. In Maharashtra, the move also impacts the process of obtaining delayed birth certificates, with Aadhaar no longer being accepted as supporting documentation. Furthermore, any birth certificates issued using only Aadhaar after the recent amendments to the Births and Deaths Registration Act, 2023, will be invalidated. This stringent measure aims to curb the creation and use of fraudulent birth and death certificates for illicit activities.
