Ruturaj Gaikwad, the highly-rated Indian top-order batter, is on the verge of a return to the One Day International (ODI) squad for the upcoming series against South Africa. Gaikwad, who last featured in an ODI nearly two years ago, earned his recall following a string of impressive performances for India A in the recent List-A matches against South Africa A. Captain KL Rahul has openly hinted at Gaikwad’s potential inclusion, suggesting the ‘top-class’ player is nearing an opportunity.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Rahul acknowledged Gaikwad’s consistent talent and his ability to capitalize on limited chances. “Rutu is obviously a top-class player; we have all seen it with whatever opportunities, limited opportunities he has got, he’s really utilised it and shown what he can do,” Rahul stated. He further elaborated on the competitive nature of India’s top ODI batting order, noting how difficult it is for players to break into a settled lineup. “Unfortunately, in ODI cricket, the top six or the top five is quite settled and they are performing really well. So you feel bad for players not getting enough opportunities,” he added.
However, with injuries sidelining key players like Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer for the three-match series, a window of opportunity has opened for Gaikwad, as well as other talented players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant. “Now he has gotten his opportunity with a few injuries. He will get his opportunity at some stage, and yeah, looking forward to giving him that chance and letting him show what he can do and do the job for the team,” Rahul confirmed. While keeping the final playing XI under wraps for the first ODI in Ranchi, Rahul did reveal his personal batting position at number six for the series.
