Delhi’s car owners are expressing outrage and frustration over the recent enforcement of vehicle scrappage policies, particularly the 10-year limit for diesel vehicles. The new rules, already active in Delhi, will soon be extended to the National Capital Region (NCR), including Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, and Sonipat. This policy has led to the impounding of hundreds of vehicles shortly after its implementation on July 1st, leaving many owners questioning the government’s rationale, especially when compared to practices in the West. Owners are particularly incensed that perfectly functional vehicles are being scrapped, given the already high costs associated with car ownership, including taxes and running expenses. Former Lt. Col. Chandra Mohan Jagota, expressed strong disapproval of the policy, questioning the government’s priorities and the lack of adequate public transport. He, like many others, highlighted the well-maintained condition of their vehicles and questioned why such cars are considered polluters. He also drew attention to the different policies in other countries, like the UK. Many Delhi residents share these concerns. The new regulations will lead to fines and compulsory scrapping, potentially affecting car sales. Owners are calling for reconsideration, particularly given the financial implications for the middle class.
