Effective September 22nd, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure will be streamlined, featuring two primary rates: 5% and 18%. A higher rate of 40% will be levied on specific items such as pan masala, cigarettes, sugary aerated drinks, and other carbonated beverages. According to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, these changes will lead to lower prices for several products commonly purchased by the middle class. Included in the 18% tax slab are televisions, air-conditioners, and motorcycles with engines smaller than 350cc. Sitharaman’s office highlighted the multi-faceted nature of these reforms, emphasizing the aim of improving the ease of living for all citizens and facilitating business operations.
